Church of the Anargyroi

The Church of the Anargyroi ("'without silver") next to the village well of Nomitsis is dedicated to the Saints Cosmas and Damian, the name referring to the fact that they gave their medical skills to the poor for free. - The Byzantine church with unusual architectural style - the domed roof covering the whole of the square building - was probably erected in the 13th century.

The interior is decorated with medieval frescoes which are however in a rather precarious condition. The faded and only fragmentarily preserved depictions include a Crucifixion, the Last Supper, various saints and Saint George spearing a serpent / dragon.

Another nice old church in this area is in the direction to Langada next to the main road. It is the Church of the Metamorphosis ("Transfiguration"). This cross in square church is dated to the 11th century and has one of the earliest domes in Mani. - Above the door is a niche with a painting of the church's saint (below right).
